Why I wrote this book

What It Is

“The Gospel According to Supernatural” is s different kind of prayer journal. It is based on the first five seasons of a tv series. Each of the entries has a description of a “Supernatural” episode and a discussion of the spiritual themes in that episode. Most of the entries include at least one question to help start a conversation, either virtually through the internet or in person.

How It Happened

One night I was watching SPN when a scene between Sam and Dean made me reach for my remote and press “pause.” Sam, the younger of the brothers, accuses Dean of not trusting him, of having more faith even in vampires than he has in Sam. Dean is shocked and angered by his brother’s words. But the clearest emotion he shows is his great and terrible pain that Sam does not realize how much his big brother loves him.

Alone in my basement I clutched the remote and studied Dean’s face. There was something in his expression that I felt I should have recognized, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Then it hit me. That’s it, I thought. That’s how God feels when we don’t trust Him.

The next day I started writing “The Gospel According to Supernatural.”

Why I Did It

I wrote this book with the hope that it would start conversations, not only about the series but about the deeper truths that underlie it, like love and loyalty, good and evil, family and friendship. Most of all, hope it will express my gratitude to the creators of “Supernatural” and the family this series built. I am so grateful to have found you all, and to have the chance to share this book with you.
